Student Graduation Film: Miedo

These posts are meant to showcase the work of my students from Escena. I am not the creator of these pieces. I only served as one of several guides as these amazing artists started putting into practice what they'd learned during their first years of art school.

Miedo was written and directed by Angel de la Macorra, a rebellious and headstrong director that I was initially slightly concerned about working with and who ended up presenting to me one of the most enjoyable student/teacher experiences I've ever had as an educator. We butted heads often, but he was always smart about his arguments, and on the decisions that he dug his heels in he ended up being right.

I was particularly concerned about a long take depicting a chase scene that I thought would prove too challenging for them, and yes, getting it done was definitely an uphill battle, but he was right to fight for it. It is the short's centerpiece and the film would not work as well without it. So, Macorra, if you're reading this, you were right and I was wrong.

The short was also produced by Natsu Calixto, who was always a sensible counterpoint to Macorra's boldness and managed to run a tight crew to finish the film. Fernanda Liedo did a terrific job as animation supervisor and brought to the table not only her own exceptional talent but also an engaged group of artists and animators to collaborate on Miedo.

SYNOPSIS

In a dark forest in the Valley of Mexico, a tiny rabbit ventures out to find food. However, the sounds of the forest trigger his survival instinct, sending him into a panic attack. His fears come alive through chilling visions that push him to a primal state of fight or flight. In this state, the rabbit will discover the nature of violence and its intrinsic connection to fear, becoming what he fears most.

THE FILM IS STILL DOING THE ROUNDS IN THE FESTIVAL CIRCUIT SO I'M ONLY SHARING A TRAILER FOR THE TIME BEING.
